Top tips for summer riding

Bike enthusiast and bike hire/tour operator Jonny Clapcott offers up some tips and tricks so you can make the most of stunning conditions on a Great Ride this summer.

Stay hydrated
Bring plenty of water or a hydration pack, as summer temperatures and physical exertion can quickly dehydrate you. Plan ahead and identify water (and post-ride beer) refill points along your route.

Protect yourself from the sun
Wear sunscreen (don't put too much above your eyes), eye protection and a helmet with a visor under your helmet to shield yourself from UV rays which are exceptionally strong in New Zealand. Lightweight, breathable clothing with UV protection is ideal.

Prepare for the heat
Ride early in the morning or late in the afternoon (great for finishing at the pub) to avoid the hottest part of the day.

Check your bike
Inspect your bike before heading out, especially if it's been parked up over the winter. Check tire pressure, top up tubeless fluid, check brakes, and chain lube to ensure optimal performance. In dry and dusty summer conditions dry lube is best.

Be trail-ready
Carry a basic repair kit with a spare tube, multi-tool, and pump. Also, pack snacks to maintain your energy levels and avoid getting hangry! Trail Forks or a map for navigation (or book a guided tour to remove any hassle), as summer trails can be super busy. Remember to smile and be nice to other trail users.
